The Brown Federalist Society’s primary purpose is to sponsor fair, serious, and open debate about legal topics. The Federal Sociate chapter believes debate is the best way to ensure that legal principles that have not been the subject of sufficient attention for the past several decades receive a fair hearing. Particularly at an institution like Brown, with a history of liberal orientation, the Federal Society fills an important role in fostering intellectual diversity and respectful discourse.

Brown Mock Trial fields 3 teams that compete in mock trial tournaments as a part of the American Mock Trial Association. To prepare for these tournaments, each team of 8-10 students builds a legal case and tries that case against other college mock trial teams in front of a team of judges. Teams compete throughout the year in preparation for the National Championship Tournament in April. Team members study the law, prepare legal arguments, and work on performance, presentation, and acting skills.
